IS IT GOOD TO BE A PERFECTIONIST?

There is no such identity...

When we say he or she is perfect, we are assuming only idol situations where chances of bugs are minimum. When your work is submitted/published or out in the market, it got the best response and so it is called as perfect.

Professionalism is not being perfect.

Do not mix up the two terms. Perfection does not come bound with time and often associated with artists because they spend lots of time working on the same project. However, in professional manners, it cannot happen where you have time limits and other priorities to handle too. You, as a fresher or having less corporate experience, tend to think only about our trajectories. Our vision is not wide enough to see the end objective. Often we end up thinking it's not happening and it's our fault. Grow your vision and stick to the objective, only pick what is important and go with it.
You will be called as professional and get good appreciations and feedback when you-
  1. deliver the project on time
  2. understand the requirements
  3. set your priorities very clear
  4. give preferences to the goals all throughout the project
  5. have a good vision
the last one is important because there would be many who can deliver the same project with all the bullet points set however vision is important. Here lies your perception and your benefits too which leads you to get more such projects. And, the same reason goes when your manager does not choose you for challenging tasks. Now, you know why and we are discussing it next...

You are better than others but time management is the real issue.

You started up the project but stuck up at the first step and it is going endlessly.
Chances are-

  1. You are being an individual contributor and only thinking about your benefits
  2. You aren't able to manage the task-force
  3. You think you are being held of some dirty politics(which could be true) but I don't feel it be considered as a point because that's what you are supposed to win with your intellect.
  4. You are stuck in other pending work as well.
...and the list goes on like this
perfectionism is making me less effective

Say yes to professionalism and let perfectionist in you stay back.

Yes, it(the perfectionism) should still exist but give it a lower priority. Meanwhile, I want you to realize that superiors only craves for the end results. See, there are many types of employees which you could see on every team-
  1. the hard-workers
  2. the business-minded
  3. lazy ones
  4. I don't care what happens in the team
  5. not working at all
  6. combination of above-listed types
Smart management often put up different kind of employees in one team and let them struggle with each other. Obviously, there would be clashes and we know what kind of. By the time everyone realizes what is happening, it is time for appraisal or project movement or resignation. This is how it goes in literally every team. If you want to win over, you need to understand this with your good vision(this vision term is coming again and again and has a valid point).

asset of the organization
Whenever you land into a different team or project, you have a goal-
  • I will be having short stay here and will leave once my individual goals are achieved
  • I am here for the long run

If you do not have any yet, think about it right now otherwise there would be people who influence you and make you do what they want.(these people are in the management)

These goals get changes over intervals of time when you stay in a project and think otherwise. Well! that's good because at least you are thinking about it.
If you want your benefits, stay focused -
  1. Do not support your office 24*7 just because you don't have anything else to do.
  2. Make your presence felt with a good attitude.
  3. Make them feel your importance like do something different in your tasks. For instance, there was once a new transition in my team and the team was held responsible for the testing which involves end user's query as well. At the end of the month, I maintained a report of user's feedback apart of solving their query and submitted it to my manager. It was appreciated and I got perks too. I did not have to do much because I had the feedbacks and just had to pile them up in a good manner.
  4. While now you are in the limelight, be ready to say your goals which are important at this stage. You don't get it if you don't say it.

how should you work in a project

Now, that we have discussed a part of employee's time period and perfection part comes over a short interval of time like others. I think it is being overrated and there is the whole bunch of or would rather say a working model whose every root is equally important. Do not get stuck to one because you are good at it but work on every single root. It is good for your personal life as well however we are not talking about it yet. Many people think or say corporate culture gets away your personal life and I don't agree. It is completely up to you and as I already said above do not be available 24*7(you should know when).
